How to Calculate How Much Flooring You Need
The basic formula is simple: multiply the length of the room by the width to get the square footage, then add a waste factor to account for cuts, mistakes, and future repairs. Divide the total by the coverage per box to get the number of boxes to buy.
Why the Waste Factor Matters
Every flooring installation produces offcuts, especially around doorways, corners, and obstacles. A straight lay pattern in a simple rectangular room needs about 5% extra. A diagonal or herringbone pattern can waste 10 to 15% due to the angle cuts on every row. Always round up to the nearest full box — you cannot buy half a box, and having a few planks left over is useful for future repairs.
Coverage by Flooring Type
Hardwood and laminate boxes typically cover 15 to 25 square feet. Vinyl plank (LVP) boxes usually cover 18 to 24 square feet. Carpet is often sold by the square yard, so divide your square footage by 9. Tile coverage depends on tile size; always check the product label for the exact figure.
Tips Before You Buy
Buy all boxes from the same production lot (same dye lot number) to ensure consistent color. Store boxes in the room for 48 hours before installation so the material acclimates to the temperature and humidity. Keep at least one box in reserve after the job for future touch-ups.
