How to Calculate How Many Tiles You Need

The basic formula is straightforward: divide the total area of the room by the area of a single tile, then add a waste factor to account for cuts and breakage.

Step 1 — Measure the Room

Multiply the width by the length to get the total square footage (or square meters). Subtract any areas that won't be tiled, such as kitchen islands, built-in cabinets, or bathtubs.

Step 2 — Choose Your Waste Factor

A straight grid layout typically needs 10% extra. A diagonal (45°) layout requires 15% or more because every perimeter tile must be cut at an angle, producing more offcuts. For irregular rooms or intricate patterns, go up to 20%.

Step 3 — Find the Box Count

Divide the total tile count by the number of tiles in each box, then always round up — you cannot buy a partial box. Buy one extra box if your budget allows; dye lots vary between production runs, and matching tiles later can be difficult.
